WHAT ARE WORDS OF AFFIRMATION?
Some kids feel the most loved when they hear kind, specific words. “I’m proud of you.” “I noticed you tried.” “I love being your mom/dad.” These little sentences fill their hearts up. This love language is all about using our words to build our kids up.
Words of affirmation are loving, encouraging, or appreciative words we say to someone to let them know we see them and we value them.
In kid-friendly terms: Say something nice so their heart smiles.
Say it → They feel it → They remember it
Some children will remember what you said to them more than what you bought for them. When we use positive words often, kids:
feel seen and accepted
are more confident to try
learn how to speak kindly to others
know they are loved even on hard days
I love how creative you are.
Thank you for helping.
You’re so fun to be around.
You worked really hard on that.
I love being your mom/dad.
I noticed you tried, and that means a lot.
I love you.
Bedtime boost: say 1 good thing they did today.
Backpack note: leave a tiny note or sticker that says “thinking of you.”
Catch them doing good: when they’re kind, say it right away.
Affirmation mirror: put a printable on the mirror that says “You are loved.”
Sibling practice: have kids tell each other one kind thing.
